What is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy about?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is about Starfleet cadets navigating friendships, rivalries, and romance while adhering to Starfleet ideals. They juggle all of this while also training to become officers under a demanding faculty, and confronting a new enemy that threatens the entire Federation. The show takes place onboard the U.S.S. Athena, a Federation starship that docks at Starfleet Academy’s San Francisco campus, but can also be deployed for space missions.

In the Season 1 finale, the cadets put a stop to a diabolical plan by Nus Braka, a Klingon-Tellarite villain played by Paul Giamatti, to pillage the Federation. Elsewhere, a new Federation capital is born, and cadet Caleb (Sandro Rosta) reunites with his friends after his long search for his mother ends.

The Season 1 cast is led by Holly Hunter as Capt. Nahla Ake, the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy. Tig Notaro (Star Trek: Discovery), Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager), and Mary Wiseman (Star Trek: Discovery) reprise their fan-favorite roles.

Set in the 32nd century, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy expands the Star Trek franchise. Its coming-of-age story represents a unique spin on prior Star Trek shows, while also delivering the franchise’s distinct brand of sci-fi adventure.

Why you’ll want to watch Season 2

Well, for one thing, Starfleet Academy is a science-fiction show that appeals to both longtime Star Trek fans as well as new and younger audiences. The show’s academic setting and character-driven storytelling give the franchise a fresh angle. This addition to the franchise, however, adheres to the core strength intrinsic to the entire Star Trek universe, plus it’s directly connected to the Star Trek: Discovery timeline, with its stories occurring more than 120 years after The Burn, a cataclysmic event we learn about in Discovery Season 3.

And for another thing, if you’re going to be a Star Trek completist, you gotta be complete about it. Get our viewing guide of all the Star Trek shows you can stream on Paramount+ – and the best order to watch them in.
